Self-Discipline, Faith, and Civility: Promoting a Civil Society and Lawyer Professionalism - October 30, 2024
Hon. Douglas Lang's presentation is focused upon the imperatives that Catholic lawyers assiduously adhere to the Word of the Lord and the Law, including the strictures of legal ethics, professionalism, and all secular law. He will discuss how the principles of those imperatives are not only compatible, they are inextricably intertwined. Together, they compel lawyers to treat others civilly and with respect and dignity.

This CLE is $23 for members (our cost for lunch and room rental) and $50 for non-members. We also offer CLE-only registration options and a discounted lunch for law students. Registration closes end of day Monday, October 28 so we can submit our headcount to the caterer.
Please allow extra time for parking. Limited parking is available in the TCBA lot. Metered street parking is available for a small fee. There is also a pay-to-park lot to the north along Calhoun.
An application for accreditation of this activity has been submitted to the MCLE Committee of the State Bar of Texas and is pending.

Marcella will discuss her work representing whistleblowers, including Dr. Eithan Haim who currently is being targeted by the DOJ for exposing ongoing pediatric transgender programs at Texas Children's Hospital.

How Carl Trueman’s Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self and Richard Epstein’s Linguistic Relativism Help Explain the "War of All Against All" - March 8, 2024
Using theologian Carl Trueman’s book Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self and professor Richard Epstein’s law review article Linguistic Relativism and the Decline of the Rule of Law as guideposts, Judge Matthew J. Kacsmaryk will discuss how the philosophy and psychology of the Therapeutic Self and law school theories of Linguistic Relativism erode the “shared vocabulary” necessary to the Rule of Law. Judge Kacsmaryk was appointed to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas in 2019 and serves in the Amarillo Division.

Peter has over 25 years of experience, is board certified in health law, and is the Immediate Past President of the Catholic Bar Association. He practices exclusively health law in San Antonio.

Advance Directives and End-of-Life Considerations - October 12, 2023
The Most Rev. Michael F. Olson, S.T.D., M.A., Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Fort Worth, will discuss the ethical and moral considerations of end-of-life medical decision-making in conjunction with the Texas Advance Directives Act, including recent legislative updates. After graduate studies at the Center for Health Care Ethics as a Presidential Fellow at Saint Louis University, he earned his doctorate in moral theology at the Academia Alfonsiana in Rome with a concentration in Bioethics. His Dissertation is entitled The Function of Prudence in Withholding/Withdrawal of Assisted Hydration and Nutrition from PVS Patients: A Consideration of the Approach of Germain Grisez. Bishop Olson has testified numerous times before the Texas Legislature on advance directives and end-of-life care.

Aging With Grace - July 18, 2023
A Catholic workshop for empty nesters, retirees, caregivers, and their loved ones (or anyone who hasn't made a will). As we age or care for aging parents, we often wonder what the Church teaches about ethical medical decisions, the sanctity of life, and preparing documents, such as advance directives or a will. This event will help answer those questions and provide guidance and inspiration for the journey ahead! Our own Ross Griffith and Jenna Lusk will be presenting the segment on elder law. Cost is $15 per person or $25 per couple.

Deputy Chief Allenna Bangs from the Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney's Office and Fr. Samuel J. The Legal Enforcement of Morality - March 7, 2023
Fr. Samuel J. Maul will discuss the historical debate between Oxford professor H. L. A. Hart, a staunch legal positivist, and British jurist Lord Patrick Devlin regarding the appropriateness of laws concerning homosexuality and prostitution, contrasting this with the Natural Law perspective set forth by St. Thomas Aquinas and Prof. Robert P. George.
